Get the speeches right and all present will pleasantly remember your wedding for a long, long time. Mess them up and you will suffer the memory for just as long.

The topic of wedding speeches really deserves your attention and consideration. So what’s the solution? How on earth can you manage what others will say? You might be thinking to yourself: “Surely, this is something that is way out of my control?”

Well, if you see that the wedding speeches are something that is outside of your control, you could well experience disappointment and regret. Regret, because you did not give appropriate direction.

So here is a plan of action. A plan that is designed to put you politely in control.

Step 1. Start your wedding speeches plan with a theme

Chances are that you and your fiancé have already decided on a wedding theme. It may be a cultural theme or a seasonal wedding theme, the choice is yours.

Here’s the point. If you have selected a theme it will place you in a position of better control.

It’s your absolute right to choose a wedding theme. And it’s a very reasonable request that others support or contribute to your wedding theme.

Action step: So if you have not selected a theme, do so now. Even if it is just a theme for the wedding speeches.

Step 2. Know your audience

Ideally, those making speeches will talk in terms that the audience can relate to. In other words, what the speakers say should engage the listeners. However, without some direction from you, this may not occur.

This step will prepare you to exercise a positive influence in this area.

Action step: As part of your action plan, prepare a brief audience profile. List the different groups of people who will be listening to the wedding speeches.

For example: Bride’s family, groom’s family, important personal and work friends, special friends or associates, etc.

Also make some notes on what topics or humor might interest each group. And most importantly, list topics or types of humor that may cause problems and make sure they’re avoided.

Step 3. Communicating with your speech-makers

Action step: Write a note or e-mail to each person who will be giving a wedding speech or a reply.

Start your note by thanking them for agreeing to make a contribution.

Your message should then go on to say something like:

“To assist you with your task, I am enclosing (or attaching) a couple of help notes I have prepared.

The first is an outline of our wedding theme. This is the flavor that my fiancé and I want to project to our audience.

I would be very grateful if in your speech you could support this theme as far as possible.

The second sheet I have enclosed is a list of who will be at the wedding reception and listening to your speech. I’ve also included some notes that are my understandings of any special interests plus some notes on issues or topics that may upset them.”
